Repair of spina bifida cystica: an institutional experience

Abstract Objective Although most cases with spina bifida cystica could be closed by primary skin closure or without undermining its edges, about 25% of patients have large defects not amenable for these simple methods. We conducted this study to review our techniques in closing defects. Methods retrospectively reviewed the data consecutive 21 diagnosed setting. According surface area defect, approach was decided; small (11 cases) and flap-based (10 patients). Results The age included pediatric ranged between 3 75 days. For cases, a vertical incision done seven cases. group, bilateral rotation transposition flap circular (7 while elliptical ones were repaired via V–Y flap. Complete healing achieved after two weeks (range 12–18 days) Complications as follows; cerebrospinal fluid leakage (18.18%%), partial wound dehiscence (18.18%) superficial surgical site infection (9.09%). In CSF (20%), (10%), distal necrosis (30%) detected. Reoperation complication needed only one case group. Conclusions Flap-based procedures are recommended because less tissue dissection low rates.
